Can a fireplace be your focal point?
In Interior Design, we often talk about focal points in your space! A focal point is important because it acts as a visual anchor, drawing a person’s attention and creates a sense of order and hierarchy. There’s many different ways to add focal points, BUT, if you already have a fireplace, then you already have one!
We all know fireplaces are great for entertaining and gathering around to stay cozy, so why not spruce it up a little and make it the focal point of your design?! There are a few different ways you can do it, here’s a few we recommend:
Paint
Paint, of course! There’s so many colors to match and flow into your design, and it is probably the easiest and most affordable route to go! We love Sherwin William’s color tools to help you choose a color and visualize it in your space! Also, white washing brick is an option as well!
Limewash
If you’re not new here, its no secret we LOVE limewash! It’s such an easy way to add texture, depth, and create visual interest. There’s many different ways you can do it and you can find so many tips online! If you didn’t know, we actually did it in our new showroom and love the final result, you can see pictures here. Our favorite brand is Color Atelier!
Tile
While adding tile may be the harder job of the three, it can absolutely be worth it. Tile can create such variation and texture and the options are endless on styles and design. With many different tile materials to choose from, ceramic has been used on fireplaces for years and it always a good go to. We do recommend using a special mortar for the fireplace tile due to the heat, but besides that, it should be a fairly simple task!
Hopefully some of these tips help give you an idea on how to spruce up and add some character to your space using your fireplace as a focal point! We can’t wait to see your finished project! The project below is from our Beechwood remodel which was a Scandinavian inspired design and we love how it turned out. It flowed so well with the rest of the house.
